The D18 does sound much more crisp. I've had a D28 for quite a while now, and I think I'd really like to have a D18. They both have their place.

They are both great. I’ve played both, and I definitely prefer the D18. I think it sounds much better in this comparison, as well, it sounds warmer. The D28 sounds a little bit too “bright” for me. It’s still a warm guitar, I understand, but it just has too much treble If that makes sense, I don’t really like it.

The Hawaiian is definitely the more powerful of the two. It has a throaty growl that comes through on both finger style and flat picking, and the main reason that Jackson Browne uses his Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe so often for live performances. Saying you can get a Martin for less is simply apples and oranges. I owned and played a D-28 for 46 years and had no problem selling it when I found a guitar that, to my ears, sounded better--a Froggy Bottom. I would say the same about this guitar, and it is a steal compared to most guitars of its caliber that cost two and three times the as much.

The compressor seems to sound good. And the performance is also very good. But! - you can "hear" it too much in this demo. The signal is very squeezed and therefore small. Especially when you play funky licks you must not hear it. Or have you ever heard the compression in any of the thousends of recordings of Paul Jackson Jr. ? On the other hand I was waiting for the typical overcompressed chord sounds of the 80s and 90s from Dann Huff, Michael Thompson (ua-cam.com/video/TOQWC3Bj2S0/v-deo.html) and Mike Landau.

Great comparison, loved them both!!!! I love all the Dusenberg models, currently I have a 49er in beautiful honey and a cream colored Starplayer Special which I installed a Les Trem. The 49er has an incredible 'jangle' to it, and the Starplayer Special is right up there with the Starplayer TV, but at about a half the cost. However, I don't think either the 49er or Starplayer Special are in production anymore.

Go into the store & play them. Even the same model of guitar can sound very different. I played 5 of the same model HD-28 before I decided on the best one for me.

Agree with your conclusions but there is many guitars that can replace a d18 but not many that fill in for a d28.

I’ve been watching all of these comparison videos and thought I’d get the D18, but today I played both of them in person and got the D28. Here’s why: The D18 sounds great, it has a really nice warm woody sound, but it occupies mostly mid range, which is the same range as vocals. The D28 had a deep bass and a trebly sparkle while leaving the mid range for available for vocals, and no matter how hard you strum, it never gets muddy. It is also the more popular of the 2 and thus has higher demand if you need to resell. Hope this helps!
